This is the most interesting question I came across this week:

Because people are closed-minded. That's why. I personally think that god is a Lobster.... a ROCK LOBSTER...(echo)lobster.... ROCK LOBSTER... (echo)lobster.
But seriously, I am still confused why they can't all just agree that This being is one and the same. I mean the world can accept two different Darrens on Bewitched!!! Come ON!!!

But think of this... if god is a 'creator' in every sense of the word, then they would have to be a little of BOTH then wouldn't they. In THAT vein, why is the planet earth female, it COULD be male... has anyone bothered to check? Why was Russia 'Mother Russia' and Germany 'the Fatherland'. It all stems from each cultures view on the family and society. The Germans are a staunch patriachal society, while the Slavic cultures are Matriarchal (I have a slavic mother... I KNOW!!!). I think in essence people look o=upon god as a protector, defender, and a guide, and in MOST cultures, that is associated with males. I'm not saying it is right... in fact I am more open minded about religions than most. EVERYTHING is open to interpretation, and SHOULD be. It would be interesting to compare this to the animal kingdom, where most ofetn, the females are the hunters and the protectors. I sense another grant application brewing... mwahahahaha.

wow!
This is turning into QUITE the discussion group! Nice points Ramsey! I like the connection to bateria.. like one of those creatures with both sex organs and can reproduce at will. I am goping to mull this topic over the Edmonton crowd here ( a LOT of Bible thumpers here... from Saskatchewan) and see what kind of trouble I can get myself into.... results to follow!

Hey boys,

You both have made really good points. John, you took it off my tongue when you mentioned that societies will create a "father"land according to whether they follow patriarchy or not.

What I was thinking about was why we say "mother nature" as well, and I probably think its the same reason we say "He" when we think about God (at least in Western society). Women are associated as creatures who give birth and are more nurturing. Based on the society, I think that a society will create God as "male" or "female" according to the characteristics they wish their God to have. For example, men in Western society is viewed as the protector, the figther, the sex that is to be feared, whereas women are the more compassionate, more nurturing type. My views here will probably piss some people off, but I also think that a religion that wants their God to be "feared" will want their God to be male, as opposed to female.

Personally, I do not believe God has a gender, because I also do not believe that we are made in God's image. To me, gender is an illusion, there is no such thing as gender. Sex is biology, gender is culture.

Hmm...is gender really just an illusion?

Ramsey,

I absolutely agree with you, it is a culturally imposed idea, however, I start to think about transgendered individuals when it comes to gender and culture. From a very young age, these individuals will feel trapped in a body that they do not feel they belong to, however, before even realizing that they have the "wrong sex" they will attach other aspects of their body (like what they wear, who they associate with, and even the activities they choose). I still think this is all due to cultural influence. I mean, children are really smart. They will notice what makes a boy a "boy" and a girl a "girl" from a very young age (like age 2 and 3).

Ramsey,

What constitutes "boy" and "girl" is the way a society feels about "masculine" and "feminine" The reason we have the distinction of masculine and feminine is because of evolutionary purposes of course. We can't get over that, and even though there really is no real biological basis for what is masculine or feminine, it still holds in society today.
