Sneaky Michelangelo

When Michelangelo painted the chapel ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in 1512 he actually never named the various panels, instead, we have given them names. However, does the famous "creation" (where God and Adam's fingers nearly touch) contain an image that has been misunderstood for 487 years--a brain that symbolizes God bestowing intellect on man. Over the previous half millennium scholars have interpreted the painting to mean God bestowed life on man. A Professor by the name of Dr. Meshberger researched Michelangelo's private life and found that the artist had deep religious beliefs and used to dissect cadavers to study the human form for his art. The following drawing illustrate how Dr. Meshberger identifies many of the brain's structures inthe image of God's swirling cloak and the surrounding angels.

Did God bestow intellect on man? Or did man just create the image of God in his mind?

Annie, have you ever read Ludwig Feuerbach? His piece of work "The Essence of Christianty" is a classic piece that explored anthropomorphism, and ultimately made the claim that 'God' is nothing more than perfected human qualities collected and personified in one so-called deity. When you think about it, all the qualities that the Christian God has are human qualities - the only difference is that these qualities are had in their most complete and perfect form. In essence, man was trying to find a way to worship himself, but wanted to do it in a way that remained somewhat humble, recognizing the shortfalls of humanity. Marx took a hold of Feuerbach, and, along with a little bit of Hegel, began to develop what ultimately became known as Communism. (This is ironic since Feuerbach studied under Hegel and much of his work is dedicated to opposing Hegel)

If you ever feel like reading a little philosophy of the contiental variety, and want to explore this question a little more, check out the entire copy of Feuerbach's piece here.

I trust you are doing well!
