Sanity is relative. What if all the people we consider to be "Insane" actually have a grip on "reality" and were the ones living an illusion. Insane for me, is a man who asks a woman what her age is. A man who asks a woman, "what's wrong?" and she says "nothing"...and he believes her. Insane is a man who tells a woman she's gained some weight.
Hmmmm, what do I consider "insane". Let's see....ohhh I know, how about this; women who spend all their time, energy and money getting a post secondary education and then just get married and don't do anything with their degree. I think that's insane!!!!
I think that sanity can also be understood as how "well" a person "conforms" to the social norms of their society. So yeah, I also think that sanity can be relative from one society to the next, however, like our previous discussion on ethical relativism, I still believe that there is a more general underlying definition of sanity out there that applies to every individual...perhaps it is what you mentioned Ramsey (i.e., being mentally disordered).

i wonder if to be insane means merely to be in the state of sanity?
in...sane...
haha
I think the question ought to be phrased.. what is sanity? In the same way as normalcy is suspect, is sanity suspect?
