Be honest. There's nothing more that I, as a male, hate than having a girl who beats around the bush and tries to do it 'nicely'. there is no safe way. if it's got to be done, its got to be done, and in the most effective way possible.
don't use the 'f' word. especially if you don't intend on actually working to maintain a decent and reasonable friendship.
Well, first of all, you should just be comfortable telling the truth... the truth will set you free. THAT said, if you feel unsafe speaking your mind, then e-mail is probably the safest, but also the most impersonal. JUST PLEASE don't do it over MSN, but you DO need to do it!
I concur, instant messaging is bad, especially since there is a good chance for a live response. I still think an email is the most efficient modern way. It works like a charm. I suggest you delete the response though, it's not worth reading. The relationship is over anyway. Classify their incoming mail as spam, so that's it automatically filtered and you can comfortably continue to use email without worrying about being harassed.

Cousin Annie,
The safest way, definitely, is over email! In my experince that has avoided many scratches, hair-pulls, thrown dishes, smashed x-boxes, etc.
